May 2026 “Sharing!”
Jonathan-55, thankful for his new clean shirt and pants!
Jonathan has a great attitude and trust the Lord to help him get back on a positive track after recently being released from prison for a DWI.
Life is good!
I don’t know about you, but I’m guilty of taking many simple everyday things for granted. I wake up every morning in a cozy bed, get up and get myself a cup of coffee, and lay back in bed for a few minutes relaxing in a comfortable room. Everyday I’m blessed with a bathroom, shower, fresh clean clothes, and three healthy meals. My home is safe and secure, and I can drive to a grocery store, church, or doctor’s office if needed. I am surrounded by family and friends that I can visit or speak to over the phone. Life is good!
Sharing God’s Love With The Homeless On a typical outreach we encounter between 100 and 130 unsheltered men and women.
Where to sleep?
Homeless men and women are sleeping on sidewalks, vacant store fronts, grassy areas, or just lying on the dirt. Some have blankets, and a few have sleeping bags. The more experienced ones are living in homemade shelters with tarp, or cardboard coverings, few have tents.
We generally share 25 sleeping bags and 10 tents on every outing. We share approximately 400 blankets each year, mostly in the fall and Winter.
What to eat and drink?
Regular meals for the homeless are scarce. We often encounter folks that haven’t eaten in 3 to 4 days.
Bob’s Bags come with 5 or 6 bottles of water, McDonald’s hamburger, juice, fruit cup, 2 Slim Jim meat sticks, Vienna sausages, chicken salad kit, protein bars, and treats enough to sustain them for 2-3 days.
Personal care and hygiene.
Proper hygiene is a real problem with few opportunities to bathe or wash up..
All bags include anti-bacterial wipes, body wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, wash cloth, 2 small bars of soap, band aids, nail clippers, emery board, new pair of socks, and a roll of toilet tissue. All women receive and additional backpack with personal care items just for women.
Spiritual and educational material
Homeless men and women live with fear, loneliness, uncertainty, and hunger every day. Most of them are believers and trust God to carry them through each day.
Each bag comes with a large print New Testament, John 3:16 Bible tract, prayer and encouragement pamphlet, note pad and pen, and a Homeless Services directory.
Good to have it when you need it!
Hot temperatures, unpredictable weather, and insects can add additional misery to their lives.
Everyone receives a rain poncho and a mylar emergency blanket. Insect repellent is expensive but a life saver for those living outdoors. (we plan to share around 400 cans this year) Microfiber neck cloths cool their bodies down in the summer.
Clothing
Can you imagine wearing the same clothes you have on right now for days or weeks?
Each outreach consists of a men’s clothing vehicle, and a women’s clothing vehicle. Team members give personal attention in helping our homeless friends with neatly folded clean clothing for them to choose from. Each outing consists of clothing items that fit the season. In addition to socks in their bags, our friends can choose from t-shirts, Polo shirts, shorts, pants, tops, bras, briefs, caps, stretch pants, belts, and Depends adult underwear. Winter items include sweaters, jackets, coats, hoodies, long-sleeve shirts, sweatshirts/pants, warm hats, and gloves. This month we have given out more than 650 articles of clothing.
Shoes and Socks
Good shoes, suitable for wearing outdoors, are a hot commodity! Sadly, people stealing other folks’ property is a real problem among the homeless. We often see men and women walking around wearing only socks or barefooted.
We very much appreciate donations of new or gently worn shoes suitable for outdoors. We are always looking for deals/markdowns at Costco and other places. We especially need larger shoes for men in sizes 12-16. This past Sunday we were able to provide shoes to 56 men and women. Our goal this year is to furnish shoes to 800 needy people. New socks are included with every bag.
Cold weather
Our homeless friends carry all their worldly positions with them, not wanting to risk having items stolen. Their cold weather gear is in bad shape by this time of the year so those items get thrown away. Late October through February is the time folks are especially needing coats, jackets, hoodies, hats, and gloves.
Depending on weather conditions, we normally begin giving out hoodies and jackets in October. Gloves, warm caps, and coats are popular November through February. Blankets are needed all year, especially in the winter months. Annually we share approximately four hundred blankets, and a combined total of fifteen hundred pairs of gloves, warm hats, hoodies, sweatshirts, jackets, and coats. (NOTE: we accept winter weather clothing all year)
The crowds were out this past Sunday as we shared with more than 120 needy souls!
James-52, and wife Kristi-50, are facing tough times. They have been homeless, living on the streets for the past two weeks, and had most of their belongings stolen twice. They very much appreciated our sharing.
Our ladies sharing clothing.
