How are Your Shoes?
Isaiah 58: 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter - when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
A Letter from Bob Cawthon
Dear Friends and Family,
As I look back now, growing up in the fifties and sixties was a pretty good life. We never went hungry, but I’m sure my Mother and Dad had to make sacrifices to keep their seven children clothed. Fortunately for me, I was the seventh child, and the recipient of hand-me-downs from my four brothers.
Shoes were another thing! I remember Mother taking me to Hardy’s Shoe store on Jefferson Blvd. in Oak Cliff, where all of their shoes were priced at $7.77. She told me to take care of the new shoes, because it would probably be another year before I got new ones! It was not uncommon to wear holes in the sole and have to put cardboard in them so you wouldn’t have more holes in your socks. More embarrassing was when the soles started flapping and needed repair. Oh well, it could have been much worse!
Looking back now, we were shoe poor, but nothing like I see on the streets of Dallas. Our homeless brothers and sisters are desperate for shoes, and it’s not uncommon for someone to steal their shoes while they are sleeping. Many have no shoes or socks, or their shoes are too small or too large.
I’m often asked, “What do you need for Bob’s Bags”?
This summer has been brutally hot, especially for people who are out in it 24 hours a day. Imagine wearing the same shirt, pants, underwear, and socks for days or weeks!
Cooler weather will be here before we know it. Our homeless friends ditched their winter outfits months ago and will need new wardrobes and supplies. Our team will begin delivering hoodies, jackets, winter socks, warm hats, gloves, and blankets in October. Sleeping bags and tents will be warm commodities!
Year to date we have supplied 428 pairs of shoes to our homeless friends and more than 20 pairs to locals in need. Recently, we received a call from the Desoto Care Team needing help for a large family that lost their home to a fire. We were able to assist with six new pairs of shoes, clothing, and more.
Shoes, blankets, sleeping bags, tents, and cold weather clothing are our greatest need at this time. We constantly look for deals and closeouts on new shoes and have purchased several hundred pair this year at 75% off retail, on average. Our goal is to distribute 800 pairs of gently worn or new shoes for the year.

September 13th Outreach with Shoe Pics
We assisted 83 needy souls with 47 pairs of shoes, 500 bottles of water, 100 hamburgers, 80 Bob’s Bags, 29 women’s personal care backpacks, 15 tote bags, 13 sleeping bags, 2 tents, 44 microfiber cooling towels, and 39 cans of insect repellent.
The water, clothing, shoes, and supplies were greatly appreciated on this 100-degree day.
